The Monster Under Uma’s Bed
Uma finds a monster under the bed. It turns out to be even more scared than she is.
At bedtime, Uma heard a noise. Snuffle, snuffle, rustle. It was coming from under the bed. Uma pulled the covers to her chin. ‘Who’s there?’ she whispered.
A pair of big yellow eyes peeked out. Then a fluffy paw. It was Toby the dragon. ‘Please don’t be cross,’ squeaked Toby. ‘I’m scared of the dark.’ Uma blinked.
Uma was no longer afraid. ‘You can come out,’ she said kindly. Toby crawled out, trembling. Uma gave him a warm milk. He said, ‘Thank you. You’re nice.’
They sat together on the bed, sharing the blanket. They talked about everything. Toby said, ‘I live under beds because they’re cosy.’ Uma laughed. ‘You can visit whenever you like.’
When Uma yawned, Toby tiptoed back under the bed. ‘Goodnight,’ whispered Toby. ‘Goodnight,’ said Uma. And both of them slept soundly.
