The Monster Under Vera’s Bed
Vera finds a monster under the bed. It turns out to be even more scared than she is.
At bedtime, Vera heard a noise. Snuffle, snuffle, rustle. It was coming from under the bed. Vera pulled the covers to her chin. ‘Who’s there?’ she whispered.
A pair of big yellow eyes peeked out. Then a fluffy paw. It was Leo the dragon. ‘Please don’t be cross,’ squeaked Leo. ‘I’m scared of the dark.’ Vera blinked.
Vera was no longer afraid. ‘You can come out,’ she said kindly. Leo crawled out, trembling. Vera gave him a cuddly toy. He said, ‘Thank you. You’re nice.’
They sat together on the bed, sharing the blanket. They talked about everything. Leo said, ‘I live under beds because they’re cosy.’ Vera laughed. ‘You can visit whenever you like.’
When Vera yawned, Leo tiptoed back under the bed. ‘Goodnight,’ whispered Leo. ‘Goodnight,’ said Vera. And both of them slept soundly.
