Ruby and the Magic Stone Soup
Ruby makes soup from a stone, and the whole village adds one thing at a time.
Ruby the rabbit arrived in a village on a cold evening, very hungry. The people shut their doors. ‘We have nothing to spare,’ they said. Ruby sat in the square, thinking.
Then Ruby lit a fire and filled a big pot with water. She dropped in a smooth round stone. ‘I’m making stone soup,’ she announced. ‘It’s magic. It only needs a little something extra.’
Iris the piglet peeked out. ‘Stone soup?’ she said. ‘I have some potatoes.’ Into the pot they went. Then Suki the squirrel brought herbs. Hattie the pony brought a bag of rice.
The soup bubbled and smelled wonderful. Soon the whole village gathered round with bowls and spoons. Everyone shared, and there was plenty for all.
‘Best soup I ever had,’ said Hattie. Ruby smiled and fished out the stone. ‘The magic wasn’t in the stone,’ she said. ‘It was in sharing.’ And the village was never unfriendly again.
