X Marks the Spot, Says Elsa
Elsa finds an old map with a big red X. Time to go hunting for treasure!
Elsa was a young pirate, and had a small ship called the Sea Sparrow. One day, Elsa found a bottle on the beach. Inside was a rolled-up map with a big red X. ‘Treasure!’ squawked Pippa the parrot.
The map showed how to find an island with a skull-shaped rock. ‘Let’s go!’ said Elsa. With Gus the giraffe at the wheel and Pippa on Elsa’s shoulder, the Sea Sparrow set sail. The wind filled the sail.
They sailed past a school of dancing fish and a very big, very friendly whale. They sailed through a rainy cloud and out the other side. At last, Pippa cried, ‘Land ahoy!’ And there was the island.
They followed the map: ten steps past a skull-shaped rock, then left at the tall rock, then three steps towards the old well. ‘Here!’ said Elsa. The red X was painted on a flat, white stone. They dug and dug.
Clunk! The spade hit something hard. It was a chest! Elsa opened the lid slowly. Inside lay sparkling instruments. ‘Wow!’ said Gus. ‘It’s not what I expected,’ said Elsa, ‘but it’s wonderful.’
Back on the ship, Elsa sat thinking. ‘We can’t keep all this,’ she said. ‘It would be better to share it.’ Pippa squawked, ‘Share! Share!’ So they sailed home and gave the treasure to start a music band.
The villagers cheered. They threw a big party on the beach with music and fire and fish stew. ‘This,’ said Elsa, looking round at all the happy faces, ‘is the best treasure of all.’
