Dev Looks Behind
Dev digs up a chest. There’s no gold inside, just a note that says ‘look behind you’.
Dev the deer was a little pirate, and had one wish: to find treasure. He had a spade and a map. He had a hat with a feather. All he needed was a chest of gold.
Dev walked across the island, counting steps. ‘One, two, three, four,’ he said. At last he came to a big white rock. ‘X marks the spot,’ he whispered. He began to dig.
Dig, dig, dig! Clunk! There it was, a little wooden chest. Dev’s heart was pounding. He took a deep breath and lifted the lid. Inside was no gold or jewels at all. There was only a note.
The note said, ‘The real treasure is behind you.’ Dev turned around. Standing there, with a big smile and a basket of crunchy biscuits, was Tara the monkey.
‘Hello,’ said Tara. ‘I buried the chest to find a friend. I’m new on the island and didn’t know anyone. I wanted someone who loved adventure.’ Dev grinned from ear to ear.
They sat on the sand, sharing crunchy biscuits and telling stories. As the sun set, Dev said, ‘You know, you’re better than gold.’ ‘You too,’ said Tara. And they sailed home together.
