How Tessa Got Rid of the Hiccups
Tessa has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Tessa the tiger woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Tessa. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them sent a pile of cushions flying. Another made Pip the rabbit bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Tessa. ‘I need to stop!’
Pip had an idea. ‘Try drinking water upside down!’ So Tessa tried. She did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at her.
Mabel the penguin had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Mabel hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Tessa wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all she said.
The friends sat down, tired. Pip was so tired that he began to hum. Mabel joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Tessa watched and began to giggle.
Tessa laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Tessa waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Mabel. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
