In spring, Isla the owl gave Kit a tiny seed. ‘It’s a tulip,’ said Isla. ‘Plant it in the soil, give it water and sun, and be patient.’ Kit dug a little hole.
Every morning, Kit ran to look. Nothing. Not even a sprout. ‘Is it broken?’ he asked Poppy. ‘Plants take time,’ said Poppy. Kit sighed, but watered the soil once more.
A week passed. Then two. Then, one morning, Kit saw something green poking up. A tiny shoot, no bigger than a thumb. Kit gasped. ‘It’s growing!’ Poppy danced round and round.
Soon the shoot was a stem, with leaves and then a bud. Kit watered it, sang to it and shielded it from the wind. And one sunny day, the bud opened, and there was a beautiful tulip.
‘You waited so patiently,’ said Isla. Kit smiled at the tulip. ‘It was worth every day,’ he said. And he saved a seed for next spring.
