The Hiccupping bear
Bella has a terrible case of the hiccups. Every hic makes something go wrong!
Bella the bear woke up with the hiccups. ‘HIC!’ went Bella. The windows rattled. ‘HIC!’ The floor shook. ‘HIC!’ A bird fell off a tree, and was quite cross about it.
All morning, the hiccups kept coming. ‘HIC!’ One of them made the cake jump out of the oven. Another made Dev the little bird bounce up in the air. ‘This is no good,’ said Bella. ‘I need to stop!’
Dev had an idea. ‘Try standing on one leg!’ So Bella tried. She did it very carefully. But it didn’t work. ‘HIC!’ The hiccup seemed to be laughing at her.
Dylan the lion had another idea. ‘I’ll give you a big scare!’ Dylan hid behind a bush and jumped out. ‘BOO!’ But Bella wasn’t scared. ‘HIC!’ was all she said.
The friends sat down, tired. Dev was so tired that he began to hum. Dylan joined in, then they started to dance a silly dance, tripping over each other. Bella watched and began to giggle.
Bella laughed and laughed, and laughed even more. ‘Ha, ha, HIC! Ha, ha, ha...’ And then, ‘Ha, ha... Hmm.’ Bella waited. There was no hic. It was gone! ‘Hooray!’ everyone cried.
‘So that’s the cure,’ said Dylan. ‘Laughter!’ And for the rest of the day, whenever anyone had a tiny hiccup, the whole village just laughed it away.
